My crazy birthday wish: to successfully do a PhD in Sinology (majoring in Modern History of China) entirely in Japanese language.

Moving from Sinology/Chinese language expertise to Japanology/Japanese language expertise is a tough and enduring journey. And don't forget Korean language. It's so hard to learn!

PhD Thesis

I am preparing to write my PhD thesis on Modern History of China, entirely in Japanese language (with English translation, of course), starting from very limited proficiency in the new language. 從基礎日文學起，如今我正積極籌備以日文撰寫中國近代史博士論文。

Japanese and Korean

I am resuming my learning on Korean and Japanese languages. To further develop expert knowledge on Sinology (the study of China). Being a perfectionist, my translation and editing standard and quality have always been high. How about Manchu, Mongolian, Tibetan and perhaps Uighur?

Translator's Dilemma

We have a dilemma here in the Chinese-English/English-Chinese translation industry. Those who understand the contexts of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and overseas Chinese usually do not write good English, but write good Chinese; Those who write good English often lack knowledge on the aforementioned contexts and usually do not write good Chinese.

I have always repeatedly stressed that languages are relatively easy to learn, but the cultural awareness and the understanding of the history and context are just too hard to comprehend without living in the territories for a long period. Yet I am the rare exception. Obviously my Chinese language proficiency is much higher than my English, but as you can see from my writings, my English is not that bad after all. I knew that I will face serious problems in recruitment and training of new staff eventually.

MY FIVE-YEAR PLAN (2019-2024): FIVE LANGUAGES

Not everyone can become an editor. Not just punctuation rules, but also consistency and clarity of complex expression!

Besides being a proofreader, my strength is to write professionally in English; and to produce original sentimental writings in Chinese literature. In formal documents, the most important things are quality and CONSISTENCY in vocabularies and styles, as opposed to informal documents. I can write both, but I do not read fiction. 和我同一地区的中小学同学相比，我不仅研究西洋汉学及中国近代史多年，而且性格思维和成长际遇独特，因此气质、文笔和沟通技巧都不像本地人。拒绝随波逐流、人云亦云，力图独当一面，积极扩展中港澳台人脉，坚持一步一脚印，从没有到有，创立属于自己的公司。

Sino-centric? I have published more than 300 short articles online, in English and Chinese!

Learning Spanish/Portuguese is very easy, unlike Japanese/Korean which are very tough, even for Chinese speaker! But I will carry on with all four!

Dr. Sun Yat-sen spoke seven (7) languages too. I am aspiring to become a speaker of nine (9) languages including several mutually intelligible Southern Chinese dialects.

Walking across the street with cash and cards, buying unnecessary luxury stuff; while vagrants are lying on the roadside, and children dying of hunger in the other side of the globe?

To enlighten myself on how the real world works and to realize a better way to go about it. Something that bothers me since childhood: Most people on earth are suffering due to poverty and injustice yet there is a limit on what we can do to help them. Whereas for affluent ones, desires are the root cause torturous feelings. Not pessimistic but simply realistic. This sounds religious (Buddhist) but actually is it more like a spiritual philosophy to live with imperfections in secular settings?

Would you practice what you preach? Can you stay noble, not corrupted and not being a hypocrite when you switched your position, from inferior to superior?

On personal development: Running my own business is much more enjoyable and profitable. I am a natural born entrepreneur! I don't like to mix with typical employees with common personality. Although I have the unusual capabilities, COURAGE AND FORTITUDE to do what mainstream individuals cannot do, somehow I still feel highly insecure. Ordinary people with average intelligence often view insecurity as an unfavorable thing, however bear in mind that only insecurity can ensure one to stay vigilant and keep on improving oneself! Guess who will survive in a primitive tribe? KAIZEN!
